Hi everybody, It's Yang Li here on the BBC Learning English blog. Do you like listening to a good story? Can you think of one story that sticks in your mind forever? A story that makes you think and reflect? Or maybe you are a good storyteller yourself in Chinese? Well then that's so much the better. Now, I suggest you try to apply this method to English language learning. I can assure you that storytelling is one of the best ways to improve your spoken English. It is also an effective way to get your message across to other people in an easygoing manner. It's magical. To help you get started with this I will give you a few tips on the basic techniques of storytelling. 1. Know your story 熟悉自己的故事。 It's best if you can write the story using your own words but you can use somebody else's story if you find it too difficult to write at the beginning. I know that Chinese students are generally good at memorizing. Try to understand the key elements of a story such as what happens to who and when it's supposed to happen. 2. Rehearse beforehand 提前排练。 It's better if you have a friend or two with you when you practice because they may give you some feedback. 3. Eye contact is important 要同观众对视,多看那些热情和鼓励的眼光。 But when you look at the people listening to you, don't look at people who make you nervous, instead look at people in the audience who appear interested and encouraging. 4. Don't apologize unless it's a big mistake 不是大错不需抱歉. Your audience is not there to point out your mistakes, they are interested in hearing a good story. Even if you make some minor mistakes nobody will mind. 5. Speak clearly but with some variation of tone 讲话清楚同时要变换语调. Some people have a good story but if their tone is too monotonous(单调的) the listeners will soon get bored. I know it's not easy but once you make the first plunge you will see the benefits of it. It will help you increase your vocabulary, improve your spoken English and build up your confidence. At the same time it entertains the people who are listening to you. Next time I will tell you a storytelling event that has left a deep impression on me. Till Wednesday, Yang Li |
