I interviewed my grandpa on Saturday. My grandpa’s name is Cao XiuMing (in China we put family name in the first). He was interested in art and music as a teen. And he did good job through the teen years.
When he was in high school, China was in war with Japan known as the Second Sino-Japanese War. His most impressive thing in ninth grade is a travel from Anhua to Changsha. Actually it’s not a travel, he left Anhua for avoid the war. During the travel, he took a ship went alone the river. This is the first thing came to his mind.
The students’ uniforms at that time are Sun Yet-Sen suit or Mao suit; it is male attire in China known as Zhongshan suit (any details can be checked at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_suit). Grandpa Cao respected his teachers as his schoolmates did. He had good self-control ability. No one had misbehavior in classes. Students at that time were very hard working. I am surprised about this.
There were some groups at grandpa’s school like the newspaper group and art group. People in different cliques communicated and learnt from each other. There were few extracurricular activities at his school. The most often frequent activity that grandpa went is track. Students often run after school. A few of people participated extracurricular activities. They just had few time to take a rest. The time between dinner and study hall was off. Soirees and banquets were held several times a year.
Grandpa Cao’s mom was dead when he went high school. His father was far from him. His parents didn’t live with him. He kept up his grades by himself. He thought graduating from high school and going to college was very important. So he studied very hard.
Not many jobs were available to students. At that time, China had not been liberated yet. Few of grandpa’s friends went to work; instead, they went to college. After graduated from the college, he joined the military. Among his friends that he had in high school, there are some famous people like Zhu RongJi. Zhu RongJi was the premier of China (the ninth premier of People’s Republic of China; premiership: 1998.03-2003.03). A lot of his friends became professors and engineers later.
He thinks kids of today are not plain and hard working as the kids of his generation. But the today’s kids are more skillful at modern stuffs. The modern stuffs are good but they give more entertainment then before. So he advised teens today do not waste any time.
He remembered the Second Sino-Japanese War had a serious impact on him as a teenage student. He desired to make China powerful, mighty, and strong. After he graduated he joined the military.
